FORT WILLIAM & DISTRICT TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE

LATEST REPORT DATED 08-05-18

League matches in Fort William`s Table Tennis League for the 2017-18. season are now concluded following recent matches played at the Nevis Centre.

Division 1.

Monte Bleasdale reclaimed the title he last won in 2013-14 after he defeated nearest challenger John Grant 3-0 in their second round clash.

John however took runner-up spot following his own 3-0 second round win over Angus MacDonald. Newcomer Lenka Rozborilova found the going tough in this Division, however she showed rapid improvement and will be a tougher proposition next season, along with another new entrant Sergie Savickis.

Division 2

matches however were far less predictable, with a four way battle continuing throughout season between newcomers Costi Dumitru and Jiri Sebek, together with previous players Ruth Sime and Simon Jeffrey.

The division was won by Costi after he narrowly beat Jiri 3-2 in a very close encounter in which Jiri easily took the first two games, however Costi then pulled a game back, and then levelled the match with a very close 15-13 win. He then completed a great comeback to win the 5th game 11-7 and thus the match.

Despite this loss however, Jiri claimed runner-up spot following his 3-0 victory over Ruth, and a closely fought 3-1 win over Simon. Despite their losses to Jiri, Ruth and Simon held on to joint 3rd spot.

The league also welcomed Teo Hulub into Division 2, who despite providing good opposition could not catch the top four on this occasion. The paired doubles completion again proved popular, which was eventually won by Monte Bleasdale and Aileen MacFadzean who defeated the pairing of Costi and Jiri 3-1.

The final tournament was also played recently, this being the Handicap Singles, the final of which was contested by John Grant and Jim Hinchley. Having a +7 start, Jim took the first two games despite John`s efforts to claw back the deficit. However John then took control and won the 3rd game 11-7 preventing Jim from scoring at all. Playing with confidence John drew level in the 4th game at 9 all, only for Jim to snatch the next two points for an 11-9 win and thus a 3-1 victory to claim the title.

Although the league and competitions are now concluded, players will be able continue playing as normal through most of the summer on the usual Monday nights at 18:45. Newcomers are therefore still welcome to turn up, for practice sessions and coaching. For further information contact:
